The zest to develop advanced body armor has also enthralled firms to initiate new business strategies. In 2021, DuPont announced its acquisition of Tex Tech’s Core Matrix Technology. It is a monolithic fabric structure that can significantly reduce back-face trauma, while increasing ballistic and fragmentation performance for defense and law enforcement personnel. Such acquisition would enable the development of more flexible and lightweight ballistic solutions that increase the comfort of wearing bullet-resistant body armor, whilst meeting new NIJ standards for enhanced durability.

Consistent Rise in Military Spending Worldwide

According to data published by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), the worldwide military expenditure had reached $1,981 billion in 2020, a 2.6% rise in comparison to 2019 figures. Namely, the U.S., China, India, Russia, and the U.K. were the five biggest military spenders in 2020. This increase in military expenditure is primarily attributed to heavy investment in R&D and in several long-term projects like modernizing the arsenal and large-scale arms procurement.

Developing countries that are seeking to expand their arsenal could see promising demand for body armor vests in the coming years. Reports indicate that the Indian armed forces needs about a million sets of body armor, costing over $2.6 billion. The country’s defense agencies are also eyeballing ways to develop lighter body armor jackets. For instance, in 2021, India’s DRDO (Defense Research and Development Organization) developed a lightweight bulletproof jacket with the help of new technology that reduces the weight of the jacket, enhancing comfort of soldiers while ensuring improved survivability.

The global body armor market is undoubtedly on a growth curve. A consistent occurrence of conflicts and disagreements between nations worldwide will spark the need for advanced body armor equipment amongst law enforcement agencies, to help maintain tranquility whilst ensuring personnel safety. Advent of nanotechnology will favor the development of lightweight and more robust versions of body armor vests. With defense expenditure growing across both developed and emerging economies, a significant portion of the budget is bound to be diverted towards countering physical injury threats.
